So today I saw an older Passat. I would guess it was worth less than 5k but it had $3,000 AC Schnitzer Type 3 wheels. Yes, I love those wheels and they look awesome but they're worth almost as much as the car. This raises the question, taking into account how much your car is worth, what is the maximum you would pay for wheels?

My truck spends its winter days up and down ski hills and its summer days on gravel, dirt etc... roads. Stock wheels and winter steelies are all I go for. Wouldn't want to scratch up a nice set of rims.

Depends. If I find a perfect set of 16x7 Volk SE37K for my Mini, I'd probably pay up to $1000, since they probably went for at least twice that when new and are long discontinued. FWIW, my current wheels were only $525 with tires. As for the Miata, I don't think I could ever spend more than $600 or so... as much as I'd love to have a set of SSR MKII, I don't think I could ever bring myself to spend what is probably $1500 or so for wheels on such a relatively inexpensive car (never mind the fact they they are nearly impossible to find in the right size/offset/bolt pattern outside of Japan). Current wheels on that car cost me ~$525 without tires.

Depending on how much the car is worth roughly around $1000

I wouldn't spend money on wheels unless I had to, like if I dented the rim or something. I've got no need for lightweight racing rims 'cause I'll never be able to got autoxing.

Wheels should never exceed 25% of the vehicle's value.

Depends. If you're going to track the car, then go after the good stuff. Craftsmanship is worth it. If you're not going to track the car, I've never had a problem with replicas. But usually, If I really like the wheels, I have no problem paying alot.

However much it cost to get these:

Kinja'd!!!

Currently that is $258 per wheel.

Today I have no monies so the real answer is $0

I've never really thought about the cost of the wheels as a percentage of the value of a car before. Mine are about 10% but I have a feeling the car is losing value faster than the wheels. If I had an old Japanese car I could very easily spend as much as the car on wheels.

I would say 7% of the car's maximum value. So for newer cars, what they cost new. For classics, the reasonable price of a good, clean example.

For customs/racers, measure by the cost of building the car. Also, I think you can go up to about 10%.

I just spent about 2 grand on a matte black set of these for the M3.

I'd go up to $750 for a set. Over the years I've bought two really nice sets of aluminum wheels from salvage yards for $250 and $200 for a full set. The $25o set were factory aluminum 14" five spoke wheels for a first gen Neon. The $200 set were aftermarket 15" five spoke wheels with no damage at all for an early 90's Dakota. Good wheels are out there, sometimes for cheap, if you just check Craigslist and your local salvage yards.
